We had the pleasure of hearing from the Associate Vice President of Social and Digital Media at CSU, Kimberly Stern, in our April meeting. In her role, she focuses on social media strategy, photography, video production, SEO, data analysis and podcasts. Specifically, multimedia storytelling about the university, which includes covering news and events and brand materials.
Stern says it is important to know some of the basics to be successful in this industry, such as being a good writer. Whether through classes, internships, or professional jobs, it is important to practice and develop writing skills. Strong written communication is expected amongst public relations, so people must hone in on this skill! Additionally, it is important to be creative, primarily working in social media. Since our generation spends a lot of time on our phones, monitor your own socials, look towards what is trending and what other institutions are doing.
In the last minutes of the meeting, Stern praises student interns for the voice they bring to the table. Student interns provide a lot of feedback regarding what is trending and what college students want to see from their college’s social media pages. Student interns, don’t forget, the work you do is essential to the organization you are working for!
