In the last meeting of our Spring 2025 semester, we had the opportunity to hear from Caroline Campbell, the public relations and communications manager for Visit Denver. In her role, Campbell works within the travel and tourism industry, where she promotes leisure traveling to Denver, Colorado!
Campbell gave us a wonderful insight into her day-to-day life in her role. She often finds herself pitching events, restaurants and special occasions happening in Denver to journalists. A big part of her day is planning press trips. When she plans press trips, she wants journalists to experience Denver as a local would, whether that is giving recommendations for restaurants Denver residents love, museums to visit, or other exciting things that are happening in the city at that current time. Another aspect of her day involves satellite media tours; for Campbell, this is an awesome tool because it allows a journalist who is connected with Visit Denver to a news station to pitch their audience to come to Denver. Other important aspects of her role include press conferences, press releases, and media inquiries.
Before our meeting wrapped up, Campbell shared advice with our members. If you are passionate about something, write about it, whether that is through creating a blog, on Substack or on a portfolio. Being a part of social media is important because it is slowly integrating itself in a lot of job responsibilities. With these first two pieces of advice, it is important to read the news, especially in the travel and tourism industry, as you want to make sure you are aware of what is happening locally and nationally. One last piece Campbell shared before the end of our meeting was the importance of networking. Don’t be afraid to ask questions because it shows a willingness to learn.
